ABSTRACT
This report provides knowledge about hydraulic systems, their various components, working principle, operation and also contains a detailed study of the hydraulic system in an excavator. The general objective of this report is to provide better understanding of the parts and functions of the hydraulic system with a case study of an excavator as a practical application. Various components have various roles within the system. They have their respective role which is mentioned in the report. It involves brief description about the Pascal’s law i.e., the foundational principle that gave rise to the field of hydraulics, hydraulic pump, hydraulic motors, hydraulic valves, hydraulic reservoir, hydraulic cylinders, filter, hydraulic fluid, hoses and fittings and also a simple hydraulic circuit to explain the basic working of a hydraulic system. Valid and resourceful information is pivotal for the advantageous operation and use of components of hydraulic systems for various purposes. For the completion of this report, we had a visit to Star Equipment Solutions Pvt. Ltd. where we were able to grasp valuable insights regarding the hydraulic systems, components and specially about the excavators. We had a thorough observation and also were able to closely examine the functionality of the boom, the arm and the bucket of an excavator. The findings include a rough explanation of the components and operation of the hydraulic circuit of a Dash 8 model Excavator. The components of excavator include hydraulic pump, main control valve, hydraulic cylinders i.e., boom, arm, bucket, swing motor, pilot control system and hydraulic oil tank. On the other hand, operations include hydraulic pump activation, operator inputs, direction control valve operations, actuators movements, load sensing and flow sharing and fluid return and filtration. As a whole, this report aims to summarize the information gathered and provide a basic understanding of hydraulic system components, their workings, and a practical application as an excavator.
